Digital money built to keep moving.

Litecoin is an open peer-to-peer payment network launched in 2011. No CEO. No closing time. LTC uses published rules, Scrypt proof of work, a fixed maximum supply, and independent nodes anyone can run.

Six ideas explain Litecoin.

Litecoin is neither “Bitcoin on another network” nor merely a test chain. It is a separate public blockchain with related design ancestry, its own asset, its own miners, and its own transaction history.

NETWORK

Litecoin is its own blockchain.

Independent nodes verify LTC transactions and blocks under Litecoin consensus rules.

ASSET

LTC is the native currency.

It moves directly between Litecoin addresses and pays network fees.

SUPPLY

The maximum is 84 million LTC.

New issuance falls through scheduled halvings until block subsidies approach zero.

SPEED

Blocks target about 2.5 minutes.

That is four times Bitcoin's block frequency, not a promise that every payment settles instantly.

MINING

Scrypt proof of work secures it.

Specialized miners compete to build blocks; nodes decide whether the result follows the rules.

PRIVACY OPTION

MWEB adds an opt-in extension.

Users can peg LTC into MimbleWimble Extension Blocks for improved amount privacy and scalability.

Litecoin and Bitcoin

Family resemblance. Separate money.

Litecoin adapted Bitcoin's open-source design with a different proof-of-work algorithm, faster target block interval, larger maximum unit count, and later its own MWEB extension.

Compatibility and shared ideas make Litecoin useful for testing and adoption—but Litecoin upgrades are decided and enforced by its own participants.

Do not confuse the ledgers

  • BTC cannot be sent to an LTC address safely.
  • Bitcoin and Litecoin miners use different hashing algorithms.
  • Each network has its own fees, confirmations, nodes, and market.
  • Four times as many units does not make each unit “four times cheaper” in economic value.
  • A faster block target does not remove reorganization or double-spend risk.

Follow a payment

What happens when LTC moves.

A wallet selects spendable outputs, creates destinations and change, signs the transaction, and broadcasts it. Miners may include it; nodes independently verify it.

1

Create

Select outputs, destination, amount, change, and fee.

2

Sign

Prove authorization without revealing the private key.

3

Relay

Peers check and share the transaction.

4

Mine

Scrypt miners compete to produce a valid block.

5

Confirm

Nodes accept valid blocks; later blocks deepen settlement.

The technology

Older, battle-tested ideas with Litecoin-specific choices.

Litecoin Core inherits substantial Bitcoin-family engineering while maintaining separate parameters, releases, consensus changes, testing, and governance.

Scrypt changed the mining path.

Litecoin chose Scrypt rather than Bitcoin's SHA-256. Early designs emphasized memory use and broader hardware participation; today, specialized Scrypt ASICs dominate competitive mining.

Because Dogecoin also uses Scrypt and accepts auxiliary proof of work, many miners can merge-mine LTC and DOGE without combining their ledgers.

LIGHTNINGPayment channels can move repeated transactions off-chain and settle back to Litecoin, with routing and liquidity tradeoffs.
ATOMIC SWAPSCompatible scripting can enable cross-chain exchanges without a custodial exchange, though tooling and liquidity matter.
MERGED MININGLitecoin miners can contribute proof of work to Dogecoin; LTC and DOGE remain separate assets and networks.

MimbleWimble Extension Blocks

Optional privacy—not invisibility.

MWEB lets compatible Litecoin wallets peg coins into an extension block where amounts are hidden and transaction data can be compacted. Participation is optional and wallet support varies.

What MWEB can improve

  • Confidential transaction amounts inside MWEB.
  • Stealth-address-style receiving behavior.
  • Cut-through that reduces redundant historical transaction data.
  • Opt-in use without forcing every base-layer transaction into the extension.

What MWEB does not promise

  • Perfect anonymity against every observer.
  • Support from every exchange, wallet, or jurisdiction.
  • Privacy when pegging in or out carelessly.
  • Protection from malware, seed theft, phishing, or address reuse elsewhere.
  • Zero metadata leakage through network connections or counterparties.

Privacy is a system property. Software, timing, network access, counterparties, and user behavior all matter.

Monetary policy

Four times the units. The same halving rhythm.

Litecoin targets 84 million LTC—four times Bitcoin's 21 million—with blocks roughly four times as frequent. Block rewards halve every 840,000 blocks, approximately every four years.

MAXIMUM SUPPLY
84 million LTC

A unit count is an accounting choice. Scarcity depends on the full issuance schedule and what nodes enforce—not on whether the ticker's individual unit price looks inexpensive.

Why halvings matter

Miners receive newly issued LTC plus transaction fees. Each halving cuts the block subsidy in half, reducing new supply and increasing the long-run importance of fees.

A halving is known in advance. It does not guarantee price appreciation, mining profitability, network demand, or security. Hardware efficiency, electricity costs, DOGE merged-mining revenue, fees, and market prices all influence miners.

Run your own node

Litecoin Core lets you verify the ledger yourself.

A full node downloads blockchain data, validates transactions and blocks, relays information, and can provide wallet and RPC functions. Running one does not require mining or owning LTC.

Safety before speed

A faster mistake is still a mistake.

Most losses come from exposed keys, fake software, wrong networks, custodians, leverage, and irreversible transfers—not from Litecoin's block interval.

SEED PHRASE

Never give it to support.

Anyone with the words can recreate the wallet and move the funds.

NETWORK

Choose native Litecoin.

Wrapped assets and similarly named networks are not the LTC mainnet. Confirm the withdrawal route.

MWEB SUPPORT

Check both endpoints.

Not every wallet or exchange supports MWEB deposits and withdrawals. Unsupported routes can strand funds.

SOFTWARE

Use official stable releases.

Fake wallet downloads steal keys. Verify the domain, release, signature, and checksum.

CONFIRMATIONS

Risk determines how long to wait.

One block is not “final” for every value. Larger transfers and exchange deposits may require more confirmations.

LEVERAGE

LTC collateral can be liquidated.

Loans add custodian, contract, oracle, interest, tax, and forced-sale risks.

Before sending LTC

  1. Verify the exact network and address format.
  2. Check the first and last characters after pasting.
  3. Confirm whether the receiving service supports base-layer LTC or MWEB.
  4. Send a small test before a meaningful transfer.
  5. Wait for the required confirmations.
  6. Keep private backups and an inheritance plan.

Common questions

Separate the mechanism from the marketing.

Litecoin is a long-running payment network, not a guaranteed investment outcome.

Is Litecoin a fork of Bitcoin?

Litecoin was created from Bitcoin-family open-source code but launched a separate network and genesis history. It is not a 2017 Bitcoin chain split.

Why 84 million LTC?

Litecoin targets blocks four times as often as Bitcoin and set a maximum four times as large. Unit count alone does not determine value.

Is Litecoin four times faster than Bitcoin?

Its target block interval is one quarter as long. Real settlement depends on block inclusion, fees, network conditions, confirmations, and the risk of the transaction.

Is MWEB fully anonymous?

No. It improves privacy for compatible extension-block transactions, especially amounts, but network metadata, peg-in/out behavior, wallet design, counterparties, and user behavior still matter.

Can I mine LTC and DOGE together?

Compatible Scrypt pools can use merged mining. Specialized hardware, software, pool rules, electricity, and current economics determine whether an individual can participate profitably.

Take it. Teach it. Build on it.
